The story begins with the gruesome murder of Tessa Quayle, a young, beautiful, and headstrong activist married to Justin Quayle, a reserved and older career diplomat and amateur gardener in Nairobi, Kenya. The initial rumors and official reports suggest she was having an affair and was killed by her African lover.
Refusing to believe the official story, Justin embarks on a personal odyssey to uncover the truth behind his wife’s death. His quest takes him across Europe, Canada, and back to Africa, from the Foreign Office in London to the depths of South Sudan. He soon discovers that Tessa had uncovered a vast corporate scandal: a major pharmaceutical company was secretly and unethically testing a dangerous tuberculosis drug on unsuspecting poor villagers in Africa, covering up the severe side effects to rush a profitable drug to market.
As Justin pieces together Tessa’s investigation, he becomes a target for the killers and the powerful interests involved in the conspiracy, which reach into corrupt government circles. Through his journey, the “ineffectual bureaucrat” discovers his own inner strength and the extraordinary courage of the woman he barely had time to truly know and love.
